Adoption? Remember that?

My wife Kelly and I spent a lot of time and prayer in our early years of marriage thinking that adoption was for us.  This faded away naturally as we became expectant parents of our quiet and loving first son Eli.  2 years later, our second son Owen "kool-aid manned" his way into the world.

Sometimes in life it's kind of funny the way things happen.  Many of you have experienced the type of moment I am about to describe.  It's a moment that you remember like it happened 5 minutes ago.  Kelly and I (and the boys) were on our way to a family reunion one beautiful late fall day in November in Tennessee in 2010.  Often times when you travel, your conversation can go up and down roads of the past, present and future.  We slowly made our way back down the road of "remember the whole adoption thing".  As we traveled down the road (no pun intended) we began to realize the following:

• We each still very much had the feeling that God was clearly calling us into caring for orphans.
• We each felt like we were the only one feeling that way in our marriage and we each were avoiding the conversation with the other simply because we thought our spouse had moved on from that calling. 

Well, it was one of those light bulb moments.  In that car, we laughed, we cried, we talked about how God has uniquely designed our hearts and both of our boys in a unique way to open our home to His calling on our lives.  

Thus began a ride we have been on ever since...........

The Value of the Goal Check In

Ever make a goal and forget about it or slowly stop chasing after it?  That usually means one of 2 things:

1.  You never captured the goal in writing.

2.  You never communicated it to someone that could hold you accountable.

These are 2 obvious keys to measuring the success of a goal yet poorly practiced.  

This week I will begin checking in with the staff on the goals they set at the beginning of the ministry year separate from their team goals.  It is such an honor to check in with these God-gifted and talented people.  I have such affection for each of these hard working individuals and I love discussing their goals with them, especially when it is an area I have no gifting in.  I am humbled to help lead people who are more talented than me.  

This year we each have a goal in the following 4 areas:

• One to represent a goal with the teams you work with.  Either how you are developing, progressing or leading them.
• One to represent a goal among the staff and your relationships with them.
• One to represent a goal with the specific ministry you lead.  This can include events, weekly initiatives, culture, etc
• One to represent a goal with a leadership attribute you recognize needing your focus and attention

The Church is not perfect; neither are we

The Church isn't perfect; neither is Grace; neither are you.  Yet some Non-Christians (and Christians) hold us (or each other) to that standard and chastise us when we [the church] fail.  On the flip and more importantly, some Christians need to stop acting like the picture of perfection while positioning themselves as anointed judges for those outside the church while critiquing every move of those leading the church. One of the most beautiful creations God has given us is the Body of Christ; His Church.  Isn't it unbelievable how much we can fail others, yet how beautifully God builds his Church with all of us that fail each other? I think He wants to see our responses each other as we fail and to understand how He responds to our failures everyday in the most beautiful and humbling way. As a human, man - I find this difficult as I am sure you do to. 

If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves 1 John 1:8

There are really 2 groups here:  those of us who have accepted the love of Christ, the gift of salvation and the most undeserving blessing of grace and those who haven't.  I hold those who have accepted His grace to a higher standard of responding to failure than those who haven't. 

I am humbled every morning to wake up an imperfect father/husband/leader/child of Christ to help lead a group of imperfect people who help lead a group of imperfect people to serve and worship God in a way that is honorable to Him, not ourselves or others.  And all of this is under the umbrella of grace, love, mercy and forgiveness granted us through the death and resurrection of Christ.



The Church has led poorly in the past and will again.  We lean on our own understanding too much and we are a group of people struggling with sin. We have made some bad decisions in the past year and we will make bad decisions again.  We will fall and we will fail in our pursuit of Jesus.  None of that changes the beauty of what God designed the church to be.  Its not a good enough of a reason for some of us to bounce around from church to church.  And it's disheartening to know when some of us act the way we act it invites hypocrisy statements from those outside the church. 
 
It also means that if God accepts me in the imperfections I struggle with, He also accepts others and the imperfections they struggle with; so should I; so should we. 

So let all imperfect people accept the gift of grace and mercy and pursue Jesus together with a passion from us that only He deserves!  That is a beautiful picture of the Body of Christ!

We will fail each other at times, but our Lord never does - "It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man." - Psalm 118:8

The Most Powerful Images of 2011 - What is your response?

I recently came across the 45 most powerful images of 2011.  I was blown away at each of these.  I felt something very different as I looked at each of these and you should too.

#'s 6, 7, 11, 16, 22, 24, 25, 31, 34, 35, 39, 42, and 44 all display someone wanting freedom, finally getting freedom or sure fighting hard for something they believe in.  

#'s 2, 3, 8, 10, 13, 15 17, 18, 22, 26, 27, 29, 32, 33 and 43 all display the fury of the earth, destruction and the devastation of pain that people feel when they lose everything.

#1 displays something I hope I never have to feel yet so many parents do.

#4 displays the heart of leaders.  Leadership can be a difficult, energizing, scary, rewarding type of position.  The weight leaders feel is huge.  

#12 intrigues me.

This brings up a few questions for each of us to ask ourselves:
1.  What is your role in this world?
2.  How are you responding to others?
3.  What freedoms are you taking for granted?
4.  How do you respond, pray for, respect your leaders?  Whether political, in your organization or at home?  How do you react when you don't agree with them or their leadership?


Christ calls us to be the Salt and the Light; are you?
